You all (everyone flaming each other on twitter) have made my twitter feed so shit in the past day that I feel stupid for following you all and putting you on a 'Developers' list that I read diligently every day.

Look at this from an outsider's perspective:

1. Taylor said something privately.
2. You all got offended and put it out on twitter to publicly flog the guy.

No. 1 wasn't very cool but who knows what you whiners say to each other in private? No. 2 was outright wrong - nothing you say will make it right to anyone other than your pathetic clique.

Get back to coding assholes. That goes for all of you.

Re: #phpdrama

I understand your position. You are a leader of a group that was privately the focus of negative comments. Good leaders protect their group. I get that and I appreciate it, too.

One thing for everyone to remember, what is "private" and assurances of privacy are legal matters. In the US, our privacy is guaranteed by the constitution (which NSA should be doing!) and the Electronic Communications Privacy Act http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... defines the inclusion of electronic communications. These are basic rights and certainly rights to which Taylor is entitled.

If you want to be offended by his comments made in private, fine. But Taylor was entitled to full confidence that his comments made in private, remain in private and everyone who is exposing his private comments are violating his rights.

Re: #phpdrama

He was talking to an SDPHP Presenter about the presentation he just did for the SDPHP group. There is a lot of talk about assumptions and so yes, there was an assumption he knew he was speaking about the SDPHP group. The chat that was shared was what was shared initially so we did not see the entire chat, again the assumption was made. When the chat got posted publicly in our IRC we decided to address it publicly. Right or wrong we wanted the transparency to the members of the group about what we were saying and to whom. For the record our member are pretty split on the topic and don't all agree with us but they all know exactly what we said, there is no speculation or hearsay.

Re: #phpdrama

Since he doesn't know the SD User group is there really any other way to take those comments? Have you seen any example in public where he offended someone? Even one? I have not seen it, not saying it doesn't exist but it would be a surprise to me.

Did anyone contact him privately or was there a big rush to publicly announce the offense? As far as the others who jumped right in, I'm not sure I understand their goal as they responded to his private comment. Is he supposed to straighten up in private? Or, is he supposed to understand he doesn't have privacy?

From a PR perspective, you're right, his tweet that he didn't want anything to do with the group was not in his best interest.

This man who created software that is taking the internet by storm needs to 1) stop trusting people with private comments and worrying about their feelings and 2) start spinning his response in ways that are better from a marketing perspective.

I am disappointed in many leaders of our PHP community.

Re: #phpdrama

I agree it is unfortunate and I do not disagree with a lot you said. I honestly don't know what the relationship is between Taylor and the Presenter is and if Taylor's assumption with privacy was just. I know for myself, unless I know a person on a personal level, I assume nothing I am telling them is private unless I make that clear to them.

I think the issue a lot of us are having, I know I am personally, is the way Taylor is handling this. He could have said "Look that was taken out of context and I was not targeting SDPHP" maybe even a "sorry if it came across that way" and all this would be over. But when he continues to fire back with his tweets like "I want nothing to do with San Diego PHP. Period. Ever." is unfortunate.

I'm glad you have the respect for Taylor that you have and you are a good person for trying to be a voice of reason and I appreciate it. But for me personally, I am disappointed to see this coming from a leader in the PHP community. That's not to say that myself and others with the group didn't go into defense mode but my bigger issue is in the how Taylor conducted himself after. Regardless how the information got out and the assumptions of privacy there were, it got out and should have been handled better not with a "That was told in private." Even his "I was addressing the issue with hecklers" would have worked if he had responded with a clear response and made it clear that he was in fact not talking about the group as a whole.

To that same tone, for better or worse, it was also good to see others step up and try to get an understanding of what went down. If that would have happen from the start this whole thing I feel would have been avoided.

Re: #phpdrama

If you follow Taylor in social media and in his Laravel issue queues, you'll likely agree finding an example of him being rude to anyone is not easy -- personally, I have not seen him do it one time. He is always very patient and kind. Seriously.

What happened here was two people were talking privately. One was presenting the work of the other. The presenter was frazzled after the presentation, obviously feeling like he had not done a good job and that he had been mistreated by some in the audience (whether it is true or not is a matter of opinion, one in which each are certainly entitled).

The other tried to show support by saying "What do they know? etc." Like a friend would do, or like your mother might do when you came home from a bad day at school. The comments were really not directed at anyone specifically or even the group. It was only said to comfort the speaker.

And, it was said in private with full confidence that it would remain private.

We rely on trust in our online world. This makes me wonder -- who's private comments will be shared next? Can we trust one another?

Beyond that, one might also consider how these types of responses impact the motivation of open source software developers. Some of the comments I've seen people make -- that given his name recognition, he shouldn't expect anything that he says to remain private. That's an incredibly harsh statement to make to someone that because they shared their work free of charge and because people found it very useful, now they are not entitled to privacy. Is that really how this works? Is that who we are as a community?

I know you don't mean any harm, either, and that you are defending your group. But the truth is your group doesn't need to be defended, these comments were not intended in that manner nor were those comments intended to be shared. Trust is really important and everyone pointing fingers at Taylor right now best understand -- they could be next and they will have no cause for complaint. If my privacy doesn't matter to you, your privacy doesn't matter to me, either.

Very unfortunate.

Re: SSH AutoComplete on OSX

Thanks!

Re: [Nagios] Error: Could not stat() command file ‘/var/lib/nagios3/rw/nagios.cmd’!

Unfortunately it's stopped working for me :( Updating my CentOS server using Yum Upgrade, then re-installed dpkg-statoverride, and re-run the commands.
